Faded sign by the Great Bridge, Ashburton
It reads: Ashburton Urban District Council [which was abolished in 1974] Notice Proceedings will be taken against persons throwing or depositing ashes bricks stones garden or domestic refuse filth or other matter in this river. By order of the council, G Margery Morris, Clerk, Town Hall Ashburton. There is an older sign on the same board, under this faded writing. Clearly the council did not want to waste a good notice!
