Silent Whistle - public house
Adjoining the former Ashburton Station. This is presumably a rename of the pub at some time since closure of the station. Part of the former covered station is seen in the left background.

Former Ashburton Station
A Brunel wooden station building, now a garage. For a while this was part of the preserved steam railway that is now the South Devon Railway but this section was amputated by the upgraded A38 and the railway now starts at Buckfastleigh. There are plans to redevelop this station area but there is fierce local opposition.

Former station, Ashburton
Station Garage is in a former wooden train shed. This was opened in 1872 and closed to passengers in 1958 although goods continued to use the line until 1962. The station was used for a while by the preserved line to Totnes between 1969 and 1971 but then closed when the track was severed by the upgraded A38. There has been fierce local opposition to plans to redevelop the area with loss of these buildings. Plans are now being worked on for a potential £20 million project to return trains to the station.

Notice on door, Ashburton
I bow to no one in my admiration of the British postie, but I am rather concerned that imbibing whilst on duty is resulting in people's letters ending up on the bar room floor. Clearly the attraction of Ashburton's hostelries is too great.
