River Medway from Tonbridge Castle
The original motte-and-bailey Tonbridge Castle was built by Richard Fitz Gilbert soon after the Norman Conquest to guard the crossing of the River Medway. This is the view from the bailey, looking down on the site of the original crossing of the River Medway. The modern bridge now carries the High Street over the river.
