Hogtrough Lane, Winchelsea
A byway that links Hastings Road to Rectory Lane and known locally as Deadman's Lane after an event in the Hundred Years War. In 1359 a force of 3000 French gained entry to the town, sacked it and butchered a large number of men, women and children who had sought refuge in St Giles Church once located nearby. The ease that the French were able to gain access to the town was due to the menfolk of Winchelsea being away on a similar mission of plunder and violence along the French coast. Many of the dead were buried in the lane.
