Cottage gate (with alexanders), Rye Harbour
Near the Watch House, in Harbour Road. The strange umbellifer known as alexanders (Smyrnium olusatrum) grows everywhere here. As it is edible, I suspect it used to be encouraged in cottage gardens - perhaps even cultivated.

The Watch House
A Coast Blockade was set up at the end of the Napoleonic Wars to deal with the increase in smuggling. This watch house was built about 1825 to provide shelter and support for the blockade detachments that patrolled the coastline. This distinctive house now appears to be a private residence.
