The nests of these yellow meadow ants (Lasius flavus) can only flourish in ground that is not mechanically cultivated. Often they begin as mole hills that are converted by the ants.

Goat moth caterpillar
Photographed crossing the footpath in Brickwall Deer Park, Northiam. These larvae spend most of their lives boring into the wood of 'goat moth trees' but leave, like this one, to look for pupation sites. This example was about the size of my middle finger. This is a scarce and declining species and in Sussex mostly recorded recently from the far east of the county.
