Wittersham House (Lutyens, 1906-9)
I wasn't aware of the existence of this house, but had the local volume of Pevsner* with me and dipped into it while at Wittersham church. The gazetteer entry begins as follows: 'One of Lutyens's most suavely neo-Georgian designs, 1906-9, for the Hon. Alfred Lyttelton. Nothing can be seen outside of the earlier house Lutyens encased'. So there's an older interior, and Lutyens's design was constrained by the need to accommodate it. However limited Lutyens's options may have been, it has to be said that there's no hint here of his love of playful detail, or of his sensitivity to local materials and traditions - all to be seen in his earlier work: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2204583 http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2989419 Incidentally, John Newman gives the location of Wittersham House as 'opposite the church' - which is misleading. True, it's on the other side of the road, but to get an open view you need to turn right on leaving the church, then walk for a couple of minutes to reach the main entrance. * 'The Buildings of England: West Kent and the Weald', John Newman.
