A Battle of Britain pilot remembered
At the bend in a road to the south of Newchurch on the road to St Mary in the Marsh is this memorial to Pilot Officer Arthur Clarke. He was killed near this spot during the Battle of Britain on 11th September 1940 aged 20. For the setting of the memorial see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3103238 The photograph was taken on 13th September. The wreath on the left in the colours of the RAF was made of fresh flowers and placed there by someone from Bilsington Priory, clearly on 11th September. It is good that Pilot Officer Clarke is still remembered after 76 years.
