Ex-LB&SCR A1X 0-6-0T at Ashford Locomotive Depot
No. 2678 was built 7/1880 as Stroudley class A1 No. 678 'Knowle', was rebuilt as an A1X 11/1911; it ran on the SR it as B678, was sent in 1925 to the Isle of Wight as W4, then W14 'Bembridge', returned in 1937 and loaned to the Kent & East Sussex line until 1954, finally ran as BR 32678 on the SR until withdrawn 10/63.

Ex-LB&SCR auto-fitted 0-4-4T at Ashford Locomotive Depot
Ex-LB&SCR R. Billinton class D3/M No. 2380 was built 7/1893 and withdrawn 4/53. Ashford had a number of these for working on local branch services and they proved very unlucky with attacks by enemy aircraft during World War II - although not this particular engine.

A rare SE&CR locomotive at Ashford Depot
There were only five of these large SE&C Wainwright class J 0-6-4Ts, built originally for London outer-suburban services but rather redundant after the electrifications: No. 1598 dated from 11/13 and was withdrawn in 12/50.

Two cut-down ex-SER 0-6-0Ts at Ashford Locomotive Depot
Ex-SER Stirling class R1 Nos. 1069 (built 6/1898) and 1147 (built 11/1890) had been cut down to operate on the restrictive Canterbury & Whitstable line, but were engaged here in shunting ex-Works engines; both were withdrawn in 8/58.

Freshly repaired SR 4-4-0 at Ashford Locomotive Depot
SR Maunsell L1 class 4-4-0 No. 1784 (built 4/26, withdrawn 2/60) has clearly just been through Ashford Works, which were across the Canterbury line from the Locomotive Running Depot. In 1947, Ashford Depot had an allocation of 60:- 4 4-6-0, 14 4-4-0, 8 2-6-0, 5 0-6-4T, 11 0-6-0, 3 0-6-0T, 14 0-4-4T and 1 0-4-2T.[This pre-nationalisation shot in 1946 was one my earliest].

Ex-SER Stirling class O1 0-6-0 No. 1437 (built 10/1897 as Class O, rebuilt 3/14 to O1, withdrawn 10/48) is clearly fresh ex-Ashford Works. Note the man struggling to rotate the turntable.
