The former Horam station on the Cuckoo Trail
The Cuckoo Trail which is an 18 mile long cycling and walking route between Heathfield and Polegate in East Sussex on a former railway known as the Cuckoo Line. It became known as the Cuckoo Line because traditionally, the first cuckoo of spring was released from a cage at Heathfield Fair. The section here was opened on 1st September 1880 and closed to passengers on 9th September 1968. This photograph is looking south from High Street, Horam looking across the site of the former Horam station. As can be seen the down platform has been better preserved than the up platform. Millennium Milepost, Horam Station
Millennium Mileposts can be found along the routes making up the Sustains National Cycle Network. https://www.sustrans.org.uk/national-cycle-network/millennium-mileposts/ There are four different designs. This is one by Scottish artist Iain McColl. The hope was that communities would adopt their local milepost and look after it. That seems to have happened here on the old Horam Station, but only recently. It was looking a bit shabby 5 years ago. Image
