Filston Lane, Shoreham
Shoreham in the Darent Valley is one of the most attractive villages in Kent. The artist Samuel Palmer (1805–1881) lived in the village from 1826 to 1835. Shoreham had the dubious distincton of being the most bombed village in the United Kingdom during the Second World War. This view is from Filston Lane looking towards the High Street with Church Street on the right. The almshouses on the right have a wooden panel below the roof which says "In Memory of a Young Airman DUDLEY GREENWOOD Born Jan 10th 1917 Reported Missing Feb 13th 1943. One who has herself grown old has caused these almshouses to be made more suitable for others who are aged." The original charity in connection with these almshouses dates from 1473, but the present row of three small almshouses is probably 16th century, although recently very much restored. The plaque can be seen at http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3627264
