Just off junction 4 of the M54. There is a large 1917 built Nasmyth steam hammer advertising the nearby Ironbridge Gorge museum complex.

Telford Services
Last service station before the end of the motorway on the M54. The services aren't directly on the motorway but are located on a roundabout on the A464 "Priorslee Road" towards Shifnal. There is a shop, caff, burger place and a hotel. At the far (eastern) end of the car park (just behind the photographer) is a steam hammer as a permanent exhibition piece http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/964641 . The structure in the grass to the left is a piece of art symbolising the rivers of Shropshire.

Steam Hammer (1917) at the M54 Services Telford
The steam hammer was invented by James Nasmyth in 1839. It allowed iron ingots to be forged into large shapes whereas previously it had to done manually with hammers. Coalbrookdale in the nearby Severn Gorge is regarded as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Iron was being made there 450 years ago, but in 1709 Abraham Darby successfully smelted iron with coke to produce wrought iron. Prior to that shapes could only be produced by casting molten iron which produced heavy and very brittle products which were of limited use. The discovery of wrought iron with its strength and ductility and ability to be hot forged into various shapes allowed iron to be used for all manner of things thus helping to bring about the Industrial Revolution. http://www.ironbridgeguide.info
