John Armstrong memorial
This stone was erected in Teviot Parish Churchyard in 1897 to commemorate the Scottish reiver Johnnie Armstrong, who along with 50 of his followers, was hanged without trial and buried nearby in 1530 Image “JOHN MURDERED WAS AT CARLINRIGG AND ALL HIS GALLANT COMPANIE, BUT SCOTLAND’S HEART WAS NE’ER SAE WAE TO SEE MONY BRAVE MEN DIE”

Headstones in Teviothead Cemetery
These three old symbolic headstones in the cemetery are from left to right:- a memorial to Mary Scott, with a date of 1745. The inscription is very hard to read. The middle stone is engraved for William Frazer who died 20th November 1760, aged 107. The final stone with the two figures is a memorial to Adam Robson who died in 1760, aged 79, and Jean Beattie his spouse who died in 1755.

The Scottish reiver and his followers were hanged here without trial and the bodies thrown into a pit, now marked by this stone.
