Buildings at Newark
On the Duchess's Drive. This pleasant 7.5 mile walk follows the route of a Victorian carriage drive. Underfoot conditions are excellent, on good tracks and paths.

Silage cutting, Newark Castle
Grass cutting on an industrial scale: the harvesting machine pipes the grass into a trailer alongside. When the trailer is full a second tractor moves in promptly with an empty trailer, needing good coordination between the drivers. The castle must have seen some changes of scene here over the last 500 years or so!

Gunloop in the wall around Newark Castle
There are still substantial remains of the wall that surrounded the castle itself, with a few of these gunloops for its defence.

Newark Castle
A fine looking tower situated on a bluff overlooking the Yarrow Water and commanding the route through the valley. Thought to be the 'New Werk' mentioned in a 1423 charter of Archibald, Earl of Douglas. Like most castles in the Scottish Borders, it saw battles with English invaders and a siege in 1547-8 when the tower was found to be impregnable without cannon being available. In 1645 a hundred royalist prisoners from the Battle of Philliphaugh are said to have been shot within the courtyard. The tower appears to have been abandoned before 1700 and left to decay.

Approaching Newark Castle
The first view of this ruined castle, taken from outside the square, is a memorable sight. Located on a defensive position high above the Yarrow Water, it was well-placed to fend off attackers during Scotland’s turbulent past. For more information, see Image
