The Square, Selkirk, Scottish Borders
The statue of Sir Walter Scott, the father of the novel. Sir Walter, a legal counsel, was the Sheriff of Selkirkshire for many years. The Sheriff Court is in the background.

Market Place, Selkirk
Photographed on a very overcast day, this shows the 3 main features of the Market Place
The square Pant Well (built in 1898) still marks the commercial centre of the medieval burgh.
Just left of centre stands the large statue of Sir Walter Scott, erected in 1839.
Behind the statue is the courtroom in which Sir Walter Scott acted as Sheriff of Selkirk from 1799 until his death in 1832. It is now a museum which explores his life, his writings and especially his time as a Sheriff.

Mungo Park's surgical case
The case is on display in the Town Hall on Market Place. Since it is on loan from the Tweeddale Museum in Peebles, I assume it was the one he used when he practised as a doctor in that town.

Sir Walter Scott Sheriff Court tableau
Tableau in the old Sheriff Courtroom inside Selkirk Town Hall which is now a museum with exhibits relating to Sir Walter Scott, James Hogg and Mungo Park, all of whom were connected with the town. Scott was Sheriff of Selkirk from 1799 to 1832. Personally, I feel he looks a little too detached and laid back here, as if his mind has drifted from the court proceedings to working out the contrived plot of his next novel. The stereotyped villain in the dock looks as if he may have stolen a coat.

Sir Walter Scott's Courtroom, Selkirk
This iconic building dates from 1804, with an 100-foot-high spire that stands in the Market Place of the Royal Burgh of Selkirk, next to an imposing statue dedicated to Sir Walter himself. Inside you will discover the fascinating story of Scott's relationship with the town, through the permanent displays of personal objects which once belonged to this world-renowned writer of great literary works, such as Rob Roy and The Waverley Novels.
