Eddy Road, Newstead
According to the booklet 'Paths around Melrose' (Scottish Borders Council), the Eddy is a meadow N of the village that was once the site of a sharp bend in the River Tweed that has since changed its course.

Newstead was the home of the masons working on the construction of Melrose Abbey in the twelfth century, and boasts to be the "oldest inhabited settlement in Scotland". This bold claim rests on the nearby Roman fort of Trimontium, which was constructed and occupied during the late 1st century and early 2nd century AD. Though the fort's structural remains are no longer in evidence, painstaking archaeological work over the years has shed much light on the Roman occupation of Trimontium.

Please don?t let them cut me down
It would appear a new house is in the planning stage on a small green space in Newstead where this tree stands. For a wider view of the tree, see Image

A tree at Eddy Road, Newstead
There is a notice on the tree pleading for it to remain in this small green space in the village. It would appear a new house is in the planning stage for this site.

A standing stone at Newstead
I am reliably informed that this standing stone in a private area of ground on the west side of Eddy Road is fairly modern.

Newstead village
Newstead probably dates from medieval times and masons building Melrose Abbey in the 12th century lived here. Nearby is the Trimontium site occupied by the Romans. The house on the left is dated 1762.
