Jougs at Eckford Parish Church
This set of jougs on the south wall of the church has four links and a full collar, and was used as an instrument of punishment by attaching the iron collar around an offender's neck. It is positioned by a built up doorway and in 1718 the Session records noted the payment of "£1-10 Scots for the jougs put up at the kirk door". Watch-house at Eckford Parish Church
This watch-house was used in the days of the 19th century "Resurrectionists" who were so called because they literally raised bodies from the grave. Night vigils were held by two watchmen at a time, to prevent grave-robbing. The bodies were sold to anatomists. For more information about the building, see Image

The watch-house at Eckford Parish Churchyard
This unusual mort-house at the old entrance to the churchyard is a small round tower with a crenellated parapet. A watch-house is a small stone building constructed within, or with sight over, a graveyard, in order that watch can be maintained over interred corpses and guard against the attentions of body snatchers.
