Kelso : Old Parish Kirk
Kelso Old Parish Kirk, which is octagonal in shape, was built in 1773 by James Nisbet, who also designed Ednam House, and altered by William Elliot in 1823. It replaced the previous church, within the ruins of Kelso Abbey, which had been used since 1128, even after it had been declared derelict in 1587 following attacks by the Earl of Hertford. The Scottish Borders poet, Thomas the Rhymer, had foretold in the 13th century that Kelso Abbey would collapse when it had a full congregation. In 1770, during Sunday morning service, pieces of stone masonry began to fall from the roof, causing the congregation to flee. John Knox's nephew, Paul Knox, was minister for two years, and his son and granndson were also ministers. The new building has not always been popular, and has been described as a 'mustard pot', 'womb-like' and 'fit only for a circus'. The belfry over the north porch was added in 1833. The building has recently been extensively restored, and is Grade A listed. Banners of the Blues and Royals were presented to the church by the Duke of Roxburghe in 1927. Kelso Old Parish Church
The church is located in Abbey Row and was built in 1771-73 to an octagonal plan. The walls are of buff sandstone and while the lower windows are rectangular, the upper ones are arched. The slated roof is capped by a cupola. The adjacent churchyard is a grassed and wooded area with a random spread of headstones, obelisks and table tombs.
