A Burial Place
After the Reformation in Scotland, no burials were allowed inside churches as was previously the practice for the chosen few. The same 'few' then decided to build their own burial vaults near the kirks to bury their dead. these vaults, called 'aisles' sprung up all over the country. One such aisle is situated in the grounds of the old Galashiels Parish Church. The church is long gone but Gala Aisle, built by Hugh Scott in 1636 for himself and the Scott Lairds of Galashiels, still stands in the old kirkyard. It is situated above the A7 trunk road as it enters the town centre.
