Thorniedean House, Galashiels
This house is included in the 1.93 hectare (4.77 acres) former Border College Campus site at Melrose Road, Galashiels. The college transferred all functions in April 2009 to a new campus at Netherdale Image] and according to the framework for the redevelopment of the site in the Scottish Borders Local Plan and Planning Brief, this Category C(S) listed building could be converted into flats. Thorniedean House was built in 1868 as a residential villa for the mill owner of Botany Mill in Galashiels. The house was used by a girl’s school that was evacuated from Edinburgh during the Second World War and it became part of Galashiels Academy in 1949. It was used by the Council Assessors from 1975 to 1984 when Border College was formed. I attended classes in this building during my first two years of secondary school before the academy moved to a new building in the Gala House Policies in 1964 Image (Source: SBC Planning Brief and Galashiels, A Modern History).

Former Gala Academy and Borders College buildings at Galashiels
These buildings have been empty since the Borders College transferred all functions in April 2009 from Melrose Road to the new campus at Netherdale Image This shows the east side of the former Galashiels Academy facing Langhaugh Lane. According to the framework for redevelopment of the 1.93 hectare (4.77 acres) site in the Scottish Borders Local Plan and Planning Brief, these buildings could be converted into flats with new houses built on the remaining area of the campus site. The original house on this site, called Oaklea, was converted into a school for Galashiels Academy in 1910 with extensions built over the years before the academy moved to a new school in the Gala House Policies in 1964 Image The site was used by Galashiels Technical College after the academy moved to the new school and then by Borders College from 1984 to 2009. I spent my first two years of secondary school here with few happy memories until the transfer to the more relaxed atmosphere of the new academy building.
