Sir Walter Scott Tablet at Langlee
This stone tablet dedicated to Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was rebuilt into this wall when the new Langlee housing estate was built in the late 1960s and early 1970s on the north side of the Melrose Road. In Scott's day the road to Abbotsford with the Eildon Hills in view would have been devoid of buildings. I wonder what he would think about the scene now with two sprawling housing schemes either side of the road comprising of some 1200 houses.

Beech Avenue, Langlee
Demolition of social housing in Galashiels. Built in the 1960s and 1970s, 150 houses are to be replaced with 109 new houses. Demolition began in August 2022. As well as the terraced housing on the right, one or two blocks like the white ones on the left occupied the now empty foreground. Langlee Housing Estate
Viewed from near the spot where in 1832 Sir Walter Scott "sprang up with a cry of delight" - see Image This scheme was built in the 1950s on the south side of Melrose Road while the scheme on the opposite side of the road was built in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Both schemes comprise about 1200 houses. A recent housing scheme by Melrose Golf Course can be seen at the foot of Eildon Mid Hill in the distance. Unfortunately the white wall finish stands out in the landscape.
