Housing in woodland near Bareless
Bareless is an odd name, I have had no luck in finding some erudite derivation of its meaning, so am having a stab myself. 'Barr' in Scottish Gaelic is hill or ridge, 'bar/ber' in Northern England usually means 'barley'... 'less' is most likely historically 'leas/lees' as in 'fields' ... 'lios' (usually pronounced 'liss') is Scottish Gaelic for 'enclosure/garden', so I reckon we have fields/enclosure (perhaps of barley) on a hill. Waiting to be shot down in flames :O) .... I don't have any specific training in linguistics, but I am old enough to have done Latin in school, and have tried to teach myself Gaelic, and - well, I just like the history of words and names.

Minor road at Bareless
Ancient milestone tells us it's 329L, 49E, 42Mor and 2Cor. So we're 329 miles from London, 49 miles from Edinburgh, 42 miles from Morpeth and just 2 from Cornhill. Fortunately (given that I am on foot, and that the best bus home before a subsequent two-hour wait leaves from Cornhill in 50 minutes) this means I have only two miles left of my walk from Crookham. See Image for my best guess at the meaning of 'Bareless'.
