A Waxwing (Bombycilla garrulus)
These attractive starling-sized birds are winter visitors to the UK from Scandinavia in search of food, especially when conditions in Northern Europe are harsh. This has been an ‘irruption’ year with large numbers recorded up and down the country. There have been sightings in most of the Scottish Border towns and this individual was in a flock of 20 birds on a garden silver birch tree near Manse Street, Galashiels. They feed on berries and are very approachable.

Galashiels View
Looking across the valley of the Gala Water towards Buckholm Hill from Woodside Drive, just off the Windyknowe Road. The buildings in the foreground are part of a recent residential development near the valley floor. The two bridges were part of the Waverley Line, one carrying the railway over the river and the other taking the road over the line. The three large blocks of flats on the other side are in Halliburton Place Image
