Double-headed Down express pounding up from Wellington to Whiteball Summit
View northward, towards Taunton and Bristol/London on the ex-GWR West Country main line. The 09.05 Swansea - Kingswear Summer Saturday express has two Collett-design 'Hall' 4-6-0s: No.6920 'Barningham Hall' piloting No. 6935 'Browsholme Hall' (respectively built 7/41, named 5/46, withdrawn 12/63 and 12/41, 1/47, 2/65). It was a splendid site/sight/sound in the lovely countryside of the Blackdown Hills.

One of a constant sequence of holiday expresses battling up to Whiteball Summit on the Taunton - Exeter section, the 08.10 Manchester London Road - Penzance (due 20.50) is headed by Collett 4-6-0 No. 4990 'Clifton Hall' (built 2/31, withdrawn 4/62). (Note the absence of a Reporting Number on the engine).

The 09.15 from Liverpool Lime Street was due at Penzance at 22.55 - a hell of a journey, via Crewe, Shrewsbury, Hereford, Severn Tunnel, Bristol and Exeter. The locomotive is the first production series Collett 'Hall' 4-6-0, No. 4901 Adderley Hall' (built 12/28, withdrawn 9/60).
