Water wheel at Tone Mill
One of the aspects that make the Tone and Tonedale mill sites so interesting to industrial archeologists is that all aspects of the cloth making process (combing, spinning, weaving and finishing) took place in the same location. Fox Brothers continue to weave cloth in Wellington, but it has to be sent to Yorkshire for finishing. It seems a shame that the wet works of Tone Mill can't be reopened for this purpose given that it's a few 100 metres down the road!

Tone Mill wet works
Unique and listed fulling machines (some of which are over 100 years old) survive in Tone mill, though since the photo was taken they have suffered badly from the predations of metal thieves. Fabric remnants and calcium carbonate which was used in the treatment process can be seen in the picture.

Tone Mill buildings
One aspect that makes the Tone and Tonedale Mills complex unique is that there is surviving evidence of power generation from the 18th to the 20th century, including water wheel pits, steam engines and boiler houses and the electric power house on the left of the picture.
