Neither a borrower nor a lender
This is the Pitcher and Piano - a public house. However, the building dates from 1904 (shortly after Corporation Street was built) and started life as a library. London architect Alexander Little designed it and received some funding from the Carnegie Foundation. However, the library was relocated in 1996 and the lease given to the pub chain - ironic considering that the Carnegie Foundation strictly forbids consumption of alcohol on the premises.

The old Grammar School, Corporation Street, Taunton
The school was built c.1480, 'probably refounded by Bishop Fox of Winchester 1522, and improved by Roger Hill, a merchant of Taunton who died in 1544' (from the Historic England listing: grade II&, entry 1060041). It was extended westwards in 1902, to form the Municipal Buildings, and the terrace in front of it contemporary with that 1902 extension is listed grade II.

Plane trees, Corporation Street, Taunton
The plane is particularly associated with London, but other towns have planted them as street trees too. In summer leaf they hide the Old Grammar School behind, but Image shows a clearer view of the building after the trees had been pollarded.

Municipal buildings
The old school buildings on Corporation Street. Originally Taunton Grammar School, parts of which date back to 1522, it was badly damaged in the Civil War of 1645. The school remained here until 1885 whereon Taunton Corporation took over. Eventually the council centralised its scattered locations in 1987, leaving this site as a minor office.
