Somerset County museum - beam engine
The Woolf compound beam engine from Pearsall's silk mill. Although the Museum has had a massive makeover this has remained a constant for many years. There used to be several smaller steam engines on display but it appears that they have gone into store. This was a flying visit before Xmas and we made it with minutes to spare as the Museum was closing early.

A quiet read
The back of Taunton Castle (museum) faces onto the River Tone. A short stretch of grass is just the job for some gentle reading in the sunshine.

A home for almshouses
This little dwelling is in fact a modern rebuild of two almshouses that used to be in St James Street. They were part of a row of houses dating from the 1500s, but which were demolished in 1897. The best surviving oak timbers were then used to recreate the house, and it was later moved here to the museum in 2008.

Taunton Castle entrance
The 'castle' was a fortified Bishop's palace rather than a military stronghold, except during the Civil War. For a wider context and brief history, see Image For a more detailed history see the official grade I listing, which dates this gatehouse to the C13 or C14, noting that "the upper part was rebuilt in 1495-1496 by Bishop Langton whose arms are displayed in a plaque above the arch".

Taunton Castle buildings
The 'castle' was a fortified Bishop's palace rather than a military stronghold, except during the Civil War. The Historic England listing (Grade I, entry 1231384) gives plenty of detail, but tells us it was established by the Bishops of Winchester in the late Anglo-Saxon period, with much remodelling in successive centuries. It is now the town museum.
