Princess Royal public house, Taunton
Although I often photograph pubs I have a drink in, it was a bit early and I had a plan to wander around a fair bit of Taunton before refreshments (in a huge Wetherspoon).

The Princess Royal, Canon Street, Taunton
The pub looks to have had a makeover, at least in signage, since last photographed for this site in 2018 Image It has a modest but pleasant beer garden behind, the shade of which was welcome on a hot day.

Taunton: faded former ownership
Nos 4 and 5 Canon Street are Grade II listed and date from the early 19th century. Faded paintwork above the first-floor windows shows that this was once a pub owned by Hanbury & Cotching, whose brewery was on Canon Street. Its 78 pubs were sold in 1923 to Starkey, Knight and Ford, whose Prize Medal Ales, Wines, Spirits and Aerated Waters are advertised to the left and right of the doorcase.

Pearsalls Sutures seen from Tancred Street.
This was originally a lace factory erected in 1825. George Rawlinson from Leicester began silk processing by 1835 and synthetic twine for net making was introduced after 1945. The site now concentrates on surgical sutures. This site donated a beam engine to Somerset County Museum based in the Castle nearby.

Pentecostal Church, Canon Street, Taunton
Taunton is a town with a large number of places of worship (I counted at least thirteen in the town centre). This one is a building of probably mid-20th century date.

Former tannery, Tancred Street, Taunton
The older buildings on the left are the remains of the tannery of Edmond & William Charles French who took over existing premises in 1891. The site was still working in the 1980s and housed a part dismantled beam engine that is now with a private collector - Image I'm sure the neighbours don't miss it as tanneries tend to be smelly places.
