The bookies was once, long before my time, the post office. The row of town houses beyond spent 100 dark years in the shadow of the Town Hall before its fortunate demolition in 1986.

Outside Betfred is a K6 telephone box, except artwork is seen on one side depicting Catherine of Aragon; she's holding a telephone! She did live in Ludlow Castle with her first husband (Prince Arthur of Wales) until his death there on 2nd April 1502.

Church Street
Looking west along Church Street towards Castle Street. Church Street marks the northern edge of where historically the market was held, but over time the traders' stalls took on a permanent form, resulting in the four streets that now run parallel to each other: Market Street to the south, then High Street, with Harp Lane and Church Street to the north, in contrast to the full width of the area to the west where the current market takes place (see Image). The building immediately on the right, 9 Church Street, dates from the late 18th Century and is grade II listed - see www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1202793. The Rose and Crown, the sign for which can be seen at the end of the building, is behind, accessed through the entrance visible - see Image

The Conduit
A plaque attached by the Civic Society gives the following information - 'A water supply point given to the town in 1581 by Sir Henry Sidney was moved here from the High Cross in 1743.'

Church Street
Historically, what is now High Street was much wider and was where the market was held, but over time the traders' stalls took on a permanent form, resulting in the narrow side streets that now run parallel to it: Market Street to the south and Harp Lane and Church Street to the north. This is Church Street, the northernmost of these streets; the buildings on the left divide it from Harp Lane (see Image). The sign is for the Rose and Crown pub - see Image
