The Dickin Arms (1), 37 Noble Street, Wem
Wem's last surviving back street pub and still very popular. Sometimes known as the Hole in the Wall but that probably never was its official name. Certainly in the 1900 Census it is shown as the Dickin Arms. Named after a well-known local family. Next door, on the right, is Bakery Cottage which gives a good indication of what trade used to be carried out there. Image Image Image

The Dickin Arms (3) - sign, 37 Noble Street, Wem
The Dickin family were what used to be known as landed gentry and appear in Burke's Dictionary of Landed Gentry with entries for the family going back to the mid-17th century. They seem to have lived in the Parish of Wem and also in the nearby village of Loppington. This pub seems to have been named after the family. Interestingly there is still a pub called the Dickin Arms in Loppington. These appear to be the only two pubs in the country with this name. Other photos:- Image
