Wem Butchers
The name board of 6 High Street shows Wem Butchers (R Johnsons). The shop's proprietor is currently (October 2014) butcher Antony Oliver who took over the shop in 2009. Doug Forrester had run it for 40 years previously. Did Mr Forrester take over from R Johnson and retain the trading name?

White Lion (1), 1 High Street, Wem
Desperately in need of a coat of fresh paint when photographed in March 2011, the pub is not likely to tempt in much passing trade unless it gets spruced up. Image Image Image

White Lion (2), 1 High Street, Wem
The White Lion public house, with the High Street stretching beyond it and the Parish Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in the far distance. The building is Grade II listed and is believed to date from the early 19th century, but the bowed windows at the ground floor front are apparently early 20th century. Other photos:- Image

White Lion (3) - sign, 1 High Street, Wem
The white lion has long been a heraldic symbol and is known as one of "the Queen's Beasts". It was also featured in the coat of arms of the powerful Mortimer family, who were Marcher Lords in the Welsh Marches, on the borders of Shropshire & Herefordshire with Wales. This may be why the pub was given the white lion name, although the building only dates back to the early 19th century. This particular sign is interesting because the faded paint shows some earlier lettering showing through. It looks as if the pub's name was previously at the top of the sign. Where the name now is, gold lettering is showing through which looks as if it is the name of somebody's ales. Other photos:- Image
