Shrewsbury (General) Station south end, with two BR 4-6-0s, 1965
View SE towards Wellington etc. to left, Hereford (also Bewdley and Welshpool) to right; the vast Severn Bridge Junction signal-box (behind the enormous water-tank) stands in the triangle formed by the Shrewsbury-avoiding line. Shrewsbury General was owned jointly by the GWR & LNWR, as was the line to Wellington whence the LNWR coming from Crewe branched off the GWR West Midland main line that ran from London etc. via Birmingham and Wolverhampton to Chester and Birkenhead. Also Joint GW&LNW was the main line to Hereford and the line via Buttington to Welshpool on the Cambrian Railway to the Welsh Coast. Only the Severn Valley line to Bewdley was solely GWR and this was closed in 9/63 - before this photograph was taken. The two BR Standard Class 4MT 4-6-0s (Nos. 75016 and 75063 (respectively built 1/52 and 6/57, withdrawn 7/67 and 8/68) were probably on their way to the GW&LNW Joint Locomotive Depot, which was at Coleham on the Hereford line.

Sutton Bridge Junction
A class 150 (150240) unit crosses the junction on a service from Swansea to Crewe (via the Heart of Wales Line). Contrary to appearances, the main line to Aberystwyth is the weed covered track 2nd from right. The furthest right track is a head-shunt serving Coleham Permanent Way Depot. Just visible at top right is a now very rare item on the Cambrian Route - a semaphore signal, one of two (I believe) on the whole route. The remainder of the route is signalled by the 'in-cab' electronic ERTMS system.
