Devil's Bridge, terminus of Vale of Rheidol line, 1992
View NW, towards Aberystwyth down the Afon Rheidol valley - remarkably deserted. The 1' 11¾" narrow-gauge line, built 1902, was operated by the Cambrian Railways until 1922, then the GWR and BR(WR) until privatised in 1989.

Devil's Bridge from the west
Nestling in a bit of a hollow, standing above the vertiginous drop of Cwm Rheidol to the north. A moderate snowfall a few days ago on the tops shows no sign of shifting as temperatures have plummeted.

Trees and houses, Devil's Bridge
The village lies well hidden by a random variety of trees, which also provide some protection from winter storms. The hill of Bryn-llwyd rises up behind.

On the A4120 road
The Borth to Devil's Bridge path emerges onto the road here. There is no provision for walkers for most of the way into Devil's Bridge so you must take your chances with the passing traffic.

Devil's Bridge
Looking westwards from the bridge across the railway. The Permaquip personnel carrier is seen just departing for Aberystwyth. The passenger timetable allows an hour for trains to travel from Devil's Bridge to Aberystwyth. As it was nearly tea time, what's the betting that these guys would easily beat that! The steam locomotive watering tank is on the left of the line.
