Green Dragon, 9-10 Mount Street, Welshpool
Grade II Listed public house that was until the first half of the 1980s two properties, no.9 a dwelling, no.10 a pub. Probably built at the same time, no.9 has date plaque for 1744. According to the listing No.10 was a pub from at least 1754 but I suspect this should read 1854; the earliest I found was 1844. A 'to let' advertisement in The Montgomery County Times and Shropshire and Mid-Wales Advertiser for no.9 Mount Street in 1898 described it as "containing cellar, parlour, two kitchens, six bedrooms; also wash-house, stable, and workshop adjoining". Welshpool is not specifically stated but you were to "Apply, R. Thomas, Builder, Welshpool". In 1893 the same publication advertises an auction of the 'Dragon Inn' 10 Mount Street and describes it as "containing Bar, Parlour, Sitting Room, Kitchen, Back Kitchen, and 4 Bedrooms, Brew House and commodious Stabling, and large room in the rear, measuring 54 feet x 18, and a good Garden, all in the occupation of Mr. Preece as yearly Tenant". The pub seems to have had various combinations of 'Dragon' and became known as the Top Hat for a short period in the 1970s but reverted back to one of its old name later on. A search of my directories produced; 1828 & 1835 no inn, tavern or beer retailer listed in Mount street; 1844-1859 Green Dragon, David Jones; 1868 Green Dragon, Richard Davies (listed as on High Street); 1893-1895 Green Dragon, William Preece; 1901 & 1903 George & Dragon, no landlord given; 1912 Dragon Inn, George Reese (Preece?); 1918 Dragon Inn, no landlord given. In 1986 I understand it was David Willis.

Street Scene, Welshpool
The timber frame on the end of the Talbot Inn is probably 16th century. In the 19th century the entrance was flanked by a pair of marbled Tuscan columns.

6 to 8 Mount Street, Welshpool
No.6, left of picture, is Grade II Listed and was probably built as a single house with no.5 (partly in shot). The listing dates it to the 16th century but The National Monuments Record of Wales online database describes it as possibly 15th century. At some time it was used as a pair of shops. No.6 is a three bedroom 1,264 sq ft House. (5 is two bedroom). No.7 & 8 are described as late medieval (15th Century?) two bedroom houses.
