Broad Street, Newtown from the Cross
Everything ready for the Christmas lights switch on that evening. I didn't attend but imagine the freezing fog which descended did not enhance the celebrations. There were fireworks, rendered even louder than usual by the lurking cloud; they turned the fog red and gold.

Detail on WHSmith shop front
The branch of W H Smith & Son in Newtown High Street http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2430 was restored to its original (1927) condition in 1975. Some of the original fittings and decorations still survived beneath the modern peg-boarding within the shop. The architects worked from old blueprints and drawings to restore other areas but none existed for the lanterns which hung outside. An old photograph was enlarged to get the detail and the lanterns were recreated.
The first floor of the shop houses a W H Smith museum which is open (free) during shop opening hours.
