NEW Footpath through sheep fields
I nearly opted to skirt around by the lane but I decided to plough on. Glad I did, as I found a ewe trapped in the fence. Properly stuck - head, all four legs too - because the fence was on a drop between two fields. Details to follow.

NEW Ewe stuck in the fence
Several sheep lying here scrambled up and scampered away at my approach, except this one. She was soundly stuck, with all four legs as well as her head stuck through the fence here. She struggled fitfully, waving her dangling hoofs and trying to lift her head. She wasn't in distress but helplessly trapped. Examining her plight I placed my map and binoculars on the ground and tried to find her rear legs - with a view to pulling her rearward to safety.....no good, couldn't reach her hooves or lower legs... I tried to grasp the wool on the rump and pull that. She weighed a ton! I could raise her rear a few inches but not enough to get her up and out. She looked at me exactly in the manner of anyone being grasped by the hairs on their lower back and pulled into the air - a mixture of outrage, pain and indignity. Her eye whites showed large and terrified. I gave up. I now knew I had to find someone who might know the landowner. If left she would be in distress soon. Years ago, a farmer said to me that "sheep are always looking for new ways to kill themselves!" and that has always stuck with me, and been proven to hold true.
