5-8 Severn Street, Shrewsbury
Not much to look at, but these houses are the only remnants of Benyons & Bage's flax mill, built between 1805 and 1811, the closure of which in 1836 "is believed to have contributed significantly to a sharp fall in Shrewsbury's population". The buildings were converted to housing in the late C19th; Pevsner reports that bits of cast-iron frame survive inside. Grade II listed.

The Dog and Pheasant, Castlefields, Shrewsbury
Former Burtonwood pub now a Jennings of Cockermouth pub. This most unlikely happening resulting from Burtonwood disposing of their pubs to the Banks's Brewery empire who, around the same time, acquired the Cumbrian brewery, Jennings which has so far survived. Long may it do so. The pub is a classic back street boozer which may, like many similar pubs, find it hard to survive post the forthcoming smoking ban.
