Corner of Grope Lane and Fish Street in Shrewsbury
Medieval street names often indicated the street's function or the economic activity taking place within it. For example here in Shrewsbury, Fish Street and nearby Butcher Row. Grope Lane formerly had a longer name, which included a 4-letter Anglo-Saxon word that was in common usage then but is arguably the most taboo word in modern English. The name indicated that this was an area of prostitution. Although the name was once common throughout England, it was later replaced by a more innocuous name. York went one step further than Shrewsbury. Its street was renamed Grape Street.

Bear Steps Cafe
The cafe here is long established, dating back to before the time when there were coffee shops everywhere. Not a lot of demand for outdoor seating today, but given the weather this is a pleasant place. Sadly the bookshop across the square is no more.

A bowdlerised street name
One of the most famous street names among students of medieval culture, more than one town in England had a street famed for the presence of prostitutes. Many had an appropriate name, or perhaps nickname. There was one near where the Bank of England now stands. As people became more precious about the use of vocabulary the name became shortened to a slightly more acceptable form, and Shrewsbury retains its example to this day.
