The ALB, Shrewsbury
This is the south (Meadow Place) side of the Albert Lounge Bar (restaurant, bar, cocktails) at 14 Smithfield Road, viewed in late November 2015. The ALB's website states that this was originally the Albert Hotel, which opened in 1835 and was later Shropshire's first 5-star hotel. It featured a brewery, three bars, a restaurant and more than 30 luxury rooms. In later decades, it had a range of different personas, including county darts venue, old-style "spit and sawdust" drinkers and a rock music venue. Re-established by a local family in 2012, it become The ALB. A visitor here in 2015 will struggle to believe it used to be an old drinkers' pub. Gone are the fruit machines, pool table and jukebox. In their place are quirky artwork, up-cycled furniture and a back bar display. Upstairs, the former rock-music room has been transformed into a 55+ seat restaurant with exposed brick walls and modern design.
