The public footpath actually goes off to the left of the hedge; clearly the route across the field leads somewhere for someone! Looks like there might be another route across the fields to Ball Lane, but it's not "official".

Long Butts Lift Bridge, Caldon Canal
The most basic of several boater-worked lift bridges on the canal, it seems unlikely that much traffic crosses this bridge. The Caldon Canal is not particularly busy either, so this is a peaceful spot.
