The Old Bulls Head
Tucked away on Lad Lane, a short cul-de-sac off the Iron Market, is the Grade II listed Old Bulls Head. It is thought to have originally been built as a dwelling in the early 17th century and refaced in the 19th century. It is now a popular public house.

Sign for The Old Bulls Head
This sign, depicting a Hereford bull, is attached to the wall of
Image on Lad Lane.
The Bulls Head is a very popular sign stemming from when illiteracy was rife as it is an easily recognisable emblem. It may also have its roots in Roman Catholicism from "bulla", a large seal that was attached to important Papal documents.

'Astley Walk', Newcastle
This opportunistically renamed walkway between Lad Lane and Merrial Street, of which 'Newcastle-under-Lyme Through Time' (2012) rightly says : 'The rather gloomy interior always seems more of a short cut than a destination', hosts a number of units several of which are usually vacant. It has been renamed for the nonce in the year of Circus250 http://circus250.com/ , in honour of Philip Astley, Newcastle's most famous son and the founder of the modern circus.
