This Ordnance Survey bench mark is on the south-east corner of
Image in Newcastle Under Lyme. For more information on this and other marks in the area visit http://www.bench-marks.org.uk/bm20388 .
Prior to the advent of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) bench marks were used to accurately measure the height above sea level at a given location, for England, Wales and Scotland these measurements were surveyed from the Mean Sea Level at Newlyn in Cornwall. If the height of one bench mark was known then the height of the next one could be determined by the use of surveyor’s rods and spirit levels. By the late 20th century there were thousands of bench marks located across the UK. They are commonly found on older buildings such as churches, town halls and public houses or other semi-permanent features such as stone bridges and walls.

Guild hall, Newcastle Under Lyme
The current Guildhall was built in 1713 and has undergone a number of changes. Originally the ground floor was open and was used for markets, until the Market Hall was built in 1854. In 1860, in order to provide more space, the ground floor arches were bricked up and clock tower with four clocks were added. The top rooms in the Guildhall were used for meetings by the Borough council and its committees, until 1860. It is now a grade II listed building.
