A pedestrian footbridge over the A50 at Stoke-on-Trent
The bridge connects Highfield Drive to Grove Road, and is one of several bridges of its type along this trunk road. Emerging over the peak in the road surface is the chimney of the Stoke "Energy from Waste" incineration facility. This stretch of the A50, completed in 1997, was ornamented in an unusually whimsical manner for a road of its time, making for a memorable experience whenever I was driven along here at a young age. This was the bridge with the "hula-hoops and the pea-pods", as I used to say, and elsewhere were bridges with domed pavilions on either abutments.
