Gladstone Pottery Museum - slip room
This is adjoining the engine house and the machinery would have been steam driven. This is where the clay is prepared and turned into a liquid form - slip - suitable for turning into ware. The machinery is driven by lineshafting and includes a blunger and a pump. The magnet that is visible is to remove particles of magnetic metal from the slip. The blunger was made by Wm Boulton of Burslem - a noted name in the potteries.

Gladstone Pottery Museum - boiler
This has been erected alongside the Marshall stationary steam engine and is the front end of a Cornish boiler. There is a wall-mounted rotative steam feed pump alongside it. Although this is a mock-up, it is quite convincingly done.

Placing the saggars
The placer stacked the saggars in the kiln for firing. The last firing of a traditional kiln was in 1978. There were once over 2000 kilns in the six towns and they turned the air black with coal smoke.
