Gailey Top Lock (No 32), Staffordshire
Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. The picture shows part of this lock, which seems to be called "top lock" as acknowledgement that the five widely spaced locks as far as Otherton Lock are considered as a flight. The unusual balance beams are built at right angles to the gates because the wall of the bridge is so close. Gailey bridge (No 79) carries Watling Street, now a less busy A5 now that the M54 is open. The lock here is at the northern end of the canal's summit pound (about ten miles to Compton Lock, Wolverhampton).

Gailey Bridge 79 and Round House, Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal
Gailey Lock and wharf are just the other side of the bridge, which carries Watling Street. now the A5. This was once a very busy spot on the canal and the lock house was built as seen so that the lock keeper could keep himself well apprised of approaching traffic - by road and by water.

Lock keeper's tower (detail) at Gailey, Staffordshire
On the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal this former toll and lock keeper's watch tower was necessary because the view northwards along the canal was obscured from the lock-side by Gailey Bridge (No 79) carrying Watling Street (now the A5). The lock here is at the northern end of the canal's summit pound (about ten miles from Compton Lock, Wolverhampton). The building now houses an attractive souvenir and ice-cream shop. Image]
