South Street, Castletown
Looking along South Street to North Castle Street. Note the former telephone box in the garden on the right. South Street was probably once South Castle Street, which would explain why it is to be found on the north side of the cluster of streets between the river Sow and the Railway. This is Stafford Castletown, some way to the north of where Castletown is shown on the map. It's a thriving little community of C19th terraces and artisan's houses that has even managed to sustain two of its three pubs, The Railway Inn and the Castle Tavern - the Stafford Arms alas is now a garage forecourt. The shop and post office has however succumbed.

Many of the original cast iron street name plates survive in the terraced streets of Castletown. This one at the corner of Castle Street and Railway Street is typical.
