The Edinburgh Woollen Mill shop, Gaolgate, Stafford
The interest of the building lies in the unusual Egyptianate style of the first floor architecture, using terracotta and tiles. It was built for the John Collier tailoring chain, probably in the 1930s.

Gaolgate Street
Like many small towns the buildings in Stafford town centre merit closer inspection at first floor level and above, often showing signs of their former glory when they were houses before they became shops. The bay widows appear to be a local style and may be a C19th addition to an earlier building.

Store now closed, Gaolgate Street, Stafford
You have to go close up to see the information that this was a Marks and Spencer store, the business having moved to the new Waterfront Shopping Centre in 2015. The store appears to have been an M&S original, probably from the 1930s, in their preferred neoclassical style in ashlar.

This is the northern end of Stafford's main shopping area with a selection of typical high street enterprises. The clock at the end of the street was presented to the town in 1916 by a local resident.

Corner of Crabbery Street and Gaolgate
Like many small towns the buildings in Stafford town centre merit closer inspection at first floor level and above, often showing signs of their former glory. This example of 'classical commercial' in unusual white glazed bricks dates from the 1930s.
