In August 1914 requisitioned horses were gathered in the Market Square to be handed over to the military. The 'Cheadle Remembers the War Horse' event in August 2015 brought together local horses and owners to recreate a photograph. Image
Of all the horses taken from the district only one 'Polly' returned.
