The best plot
Here's an example of the best allotment plot in Southend for 2008...and it's just as good in 2009. It's at Manchester Drive Allotments.

Manchester Drive Allotment Society site
These allotments in Leigh-on-Sea were created during the Second World War and are as popular now as they were 60 years ago. From time to time there are threats that the Council will use the land for housing but resistance is very strong when this is suggested.

Flourishing in June
Four months ago, plot 4b on Manchester Drive Allotments was under water. Now look at it. Nature has once again made a great comeback.

Any old rubbish
Allotments are for growing things - not storing rubbish. This is what one looks like at Manchester Drive Allotments.

Motor Mania?
Along this stretch of the A13 there are more independent used car dealers than you can shake a stick at. You can find anything from a Bentley to a banger. For some reason all the main dealerships in the Southend area seem to gravitate to the A127.

Former bakers, London Road, Leigh-on-Sea
'Gilberts Bakery Specialists' have vacated the premises, apparently, which has now been re-let. The rear part is at least partly 'Tax Help Direct'. On the other side of the building is another, older, painted inscription for 'Devonshire Bakery' indicating that teas and light refreshments were once served - see Image .

Old painted wall on former bakers, London Road
The last tenants of the shop were also bakers. They have their sign on the opposite side of the building, where, being on a street corner, it is much more prominent. See Image . This sign is rather tucked away - the next shop along was built later, there is a big gap on a 1920s map.
