Canvey Island’s old bus depot is now Castle Point Transport Museum. The photo was taken looking south from Zealand Drive

On New Year's Day a local bus company, Stephensons of Essex, organised special services over a number of routes normally served by other operators. As in past years several vintage buses were used for the purpose. The vehicle here is SRM7, a former London Transport Routemaster now owned by Timebus Travel of St Albans who specialise in providing vintage LT buses for special events. The bus is standing near Castle Point Transport Museum from which it will shortly leave on route 3 to Southend.

Eastern National bus 2714 is heading towards Southend from the Canvey terminus at the far end of Point Road. It is a Bristol FLF Lodekka new in 1960. This is a preserved former Arriva Dennis Dart with Plaxton Pointer bodywork in a late version of the livery of Maidstone & District, a company whose operations were eventually absorbed into the Arriva empire in 1998. Over 7000 Dart-Pointers were produced in various forms during the last decade of the C20 and the first of the C21 making the type one of the most prolific models ever to have been manufactured. The building on the right is the former Canvey & District (latterly Eastern National) bus depot which now houses the Castle Point Transport Museum on whose annual Open Day this picture was taken.

The bus is a former London Transport Daimler CWA6 built 1944 and acquired by Southend Corporation in 1953 for trolleybus replacement. Its Massey body is newer than its chassis having been fitted just before the bus went into service at Southend.

This is the rear of the north terrace of the Brockwell Stadium, home of Canvey Island FC, who currently play in the Isthmian League Premier Division, sponsored by Rymans, at the 7th tier level of the English football league pyramid. Founded in 1926, they rose from being an Essex Senior League side in 1992 to the Football Conference in 2004. The 2001-2002 season saw them achieve their greatest successes in the FA Cup with 1-0 victories over Football League sides Wigan Athletic (away) and then Northampton Town (home) in the First and Second Rounds, before losing 4-1 at Burnley in the Third. Earlier, in the 1995-1996 season, Brighton & Hove Albion survived a tricky First Round FA Cup tie here, drawing 2-2, before beating Canvey Island 4-1 in the replay at the Goldstone Ground.
